GILMUR R. MURRAY

A 1975 graduate of the University of Chicago, Mr. Murray received both his law degree and a Masters of Economics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1983. During his five years with McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen, one of San Francisco’s leading firms, Mr. Murray was responsible for a wide range of sophisticated litigation, including antitrust securities, corporate takeover and reorganization, partnership, trust, and other financial matters. Representing both plaintiffs and defendants, Mr. Murray directed similar complex business litigation as a partner of the San Francisco business litigation firm Carr & Mussman. Since 1993, Mr. Murray has prosecuted major class actions on behalf of consumers, investors, trust beneficiaries, and the public. In 2007, 2008 and 2009, Mr. Murray was elected to the Northern California Super Lawyers.

Mr. Murray is a member of the American Association for Justice, the Association of Business Trial Lawyers, the State Bar of California, the Bar Association of San Francisco, the American Bar Association, and the State Bar of California’s Section on Antitrust Law, and the American Bar Association’s Section of Antitrust Law. Mr. Murray has also been admitted to practice before other courts across the country.

DEREK G. HOWARD

Derek G. Howard received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1980 with a double major in Urban Studies and Political Science, his J.D. from Golden Gate University School of Law in 1984 and a Master of Arts in Sport Management from the University of San Francisco in 2009.

Prior to establishing Murray & Howard LLP, Mr. Howard clerked at the Supreme Court of the State of Alaska for the Hon. John H. Dimond and was then appointed as a Legal Research Attorney for the San Francisco County Superior Court. Thereafter, Mr. Howard joined the national law firm of Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro, where he conducted complex business litigation, arbitrations and counseling on behalf of Fortune 500 companies in matters involving class actions, unfair business practices, antitrust, and white collar crime.

Mr. Howard’s practice involves a variety of cases and emphasizes both complex business litigation and business counseling. He has acted as Lead Counsel in groundbreaking class actions which have led to substantial and newsworthy recoveries in the millions of dollars for consumers and trust beneficiaries. In conjunction with his participation in the Sedona Conference Working Group 1 on Electronic Discovery, Mr. Howard’s practice also includes actively working on novel issues concerning discovery of electronically stored information (ESI) in large case litigation.

In 2007, 2008 and 2009, Mr. Howard has been named as one of the Northern California Super Lawyers. As a result of previous verdicts and settlements, he has also qualified as a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum. His publications include the ABA’s Antitrust Section’s “Survey: Interference Torts” which, since its original publication, continues to be updated in the ABA Business Torts and Unfair Competition Handbook. Mr. Howard’s ongoing speaking engagements, counseling and writings cover a variety of current developments in electronic discovery, litigation, financial fraud, elder abuse and trends in sport.

Mr. Howard is a member of the ABA Forum on the Entertainment and Sports Industries and the American Bar Association's Antitrust Section Committee on Business Torts and Unfair Competition, and the Sport Lawyers Association.

Mr. Howard is active in community, volunteer and pro bono activities. Presently, Mr. Howard serves as a Special Master in Alameda, Marin, and Sonoma counties. His pro bono activities includes the representation of civil rights activist Dolores Huerta for injuries suffered during a nationally-televised demonstration at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco. As a result of Ms. Huerta’s case brought against the San Francisco Police Department and the City of San Francisco, significant changes were made to the SFPD internal policies and practices in baton use and crowd control.

Mr. Howard has served also as a Board Member for non-profit and community organizations in California and Pennsylvania and has coached soccer in the Bay Area at the club and high school level for almost 25 years.
